Corgill Happy Hear Ranch
Wednesday, February 22, 2012 Ranch Dogs   Login

All of the CHHR boarders love their horses, and we also love our dogs. Most of the pups visit the ranch regularly, or at least a few times a year. All have very interesting stories. We decided to share our dogs and their tales with you, since you already know our horses.
Rosco
"Rosco" (we think a dachshund/schipperke cross) came through the shelter and into the family. He was first adopted by a family in San Antonio with two small boys, then given to their cousin Gary Gorrell, then handed over to Gary's parents Mike and Judy Gorrell. Rosco has been through it all, but seems to have Mike and Judy wrapped around his puppy toes.

Waffles
"Waffles" will have to grow up a little before she can play with everyone else. Born in the spring of 2011, she is Amanda Gorrell's little Pembroke Corgi.

Penn
"Penn" is an English foxhound that Sherry Rosser-Carroll and her husband Jim rescued from a shelter. He loves the attention that he is now receiving from his new family, but still has a few manners to acquire -- like not chewing up the TV remote and Sherry's shoes. He should start visiting CHHR soon.

Sam
"Sam" is Whitney Pugh's rescue sheltie. He will be visiting the ranch regularly. This photo was taken on one of his first times out here. It was a little overwhelming for him, so he sought the protection of Whitney!

Mac
"Mac" is a Treeing Feist, which according to owner Sherry Rosser-Carroll is a "poor man's Jack Russell." He has been part of Sherry's family for 12 years, coming to her as a 3-week-old puppy which she bottle raised after his mom rejected the litter.

Patches and Skipper
"Skipper" obviously has strong border collie bloodlines. San Antonio boarder Sharon Brewster rescued him from the road in front of CHHR a year or so ago. He was so weak that he could hardly walk. Sharon wondered if her hubby Ed would accept a new dog into their home, and was pleasantly surprised when he said, "He looks just like a dog I had when I was a boy!" Skipper has flourished with the care Sharon has lavished on him. "Patches," a mixed breed, has been part of the Brewster home for a number of years, after being rescued by Sharon's son. Soon after that rescue Patches delivered several puppies, all of whom were adopted by friends and family.

Chuck
"Chuck" is a 2001 yellow labrador retriever owned by Kay Prince of Boerne. Kay took on Chuck when he was just a puppy and mentored him to become a service dog. She says it was one of the hardest days of her life when she had to give him up for advanced training. After several months Kay was contacted by the association who owned Chuck. She was given the opportunity to take him home as a pet. He had completed his training, but loved to play so much that they felt he would be hard to place as a "working" dog. Kay happily took Chuck back, and as they say "the rest is history." Chuck loves his time at the barn, and sometimes spends time with the Corgills when Kay and her husband are on vacation.

Saint James
"Jimmy" is a who-knows-how-old miniature schnauzer who was rescued from a ditch in Houston by boarder Kay Prince's brother. Kay told her brother that she could find Jimmy a good home. Skinny, underfed, heartworm positive, not housebroken, and not any too friendly, Jimmy proved harder than Kay thought to give away. He has a great home now. It's Kay's home in Boerne! And the two are quite inseparable. Jimmy goes with Kay on the ACTHA rides and has become a very sociable guy. You never know if Jimmy will look like a scruffy mutt or a well groomed schnauzer. But he'll NEVER again look like the stray that Kay took in.

Tumbleweeds Arizona Shedaizy
"Daisy" is a 2001 yellow labrador retriever who moved to CHHR with the Corgills when they came from Arizona. Daisy and her late full sister Zoni were both born in Arizona, but adapted to the Texas Hill Country quickly. Although she is slowing down in her old age, Daisy still keeps up with her new dachshund "sisters" Carly and Lilly. Her name Shedaizy is from a country and western sister-group that was popular in the late 1990s. Shedaizy (supposedly) is an American Indian word for "sister." And since Daisy was the little sister to Zoni, that's what we named her.

Carly Edwards Racer
"Carly" is a 2008 black and silver dappled miniature dachshund. She was too small to go into a reputable dachshund breeder's program, so came to live with TJ at one year of age. It only took a day for the two to "bond." Carly is TJ's shadow, and feels it is her job to protect her mom from anything that moves on the ranch. She already had the name of Carly when TJ got her, but the remainder of her name was added because she loves to run. And TJ is a NASCAR fan whose favorite driver is Carl Edwards. Hence, the name.

Texas Tiger Lilly
"Lilly" is a 2009 brindle miniature dachshund owned by TJ Corgill of CHHR. Her "claim to fame" is that she loves to hunt bugs. Yes, this is a real bug in the photo. No, Lilly didn't eat this one . . . but she has smaller ones than this for lunch quite often. Lilly, along with her "sister" Carly have the run of the ranch. They also go on ACTHA trail rides with TJ, but stay back at the trailer. Their little legs just couldn't make the three hour, six mile rides! But they enjoy the camp outs.
